Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association

The Maria Mitchell Association was founded in 1902 to preserve the birthplace and ideals of America's first woman astronomer, Maria Mitchell (1818-89). She discovered a telescopic comet and was the first American (and the first woman) to be awarded a gold medal by the King of Denmark.

Mitchell became professor of Astronomy and Mathematics at Vassar College in 1865 and was the first woman to be inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Today, the MMA is a science and research based non-profit organization that also conducts programs for children and adults in history, natural science, and astronomy. The MMA consists of the Mitchell House (her birthplace; now an historic house museum), a natural science library, a natural science museum, an aquarium, and three observatories.
